In the Real World[]
Some have speculated The Visaphone is probably based on the Video Phone used at the 1964 World's Fair in New York - The Visaphone is shown in the first episode of The Jetsons, broadcast in 1962. According to Britannica, the Picturephone from AT&T was the first complete experimental video phone, released in 1963, so it's possible that early news accounts and publicity of the development of AT&Ts The Picturephone influenced The Visaphone - in fact, querying Google on the matter ("the picture phone att 1961") results in this return from the generative AI: "In 1961, AT&T released a short film that showcased the futuristic technology they were imagining, including videophone shopping. The film is available on the AT&T Tech Channel..." So it seems certain the possibility exists that The Visaphone is based on AT&T's design.
